Applications
Joints connect or separate parts of a building and can have different functions. Movement joints require a suitable flexible sealing detail, while some stable joints or gaps may use a specified rigid filler. Sealants and mastics are also used around compatible construction elements and penetrations where the product is intended for that detail. Joint geometry, edge condition and backing materials affect the arrangement. Applying a general filler over a moving joint does not replace a designed movement detail.
What we assess
First establish whether the joint moves, what materials form its edges and how it is exposed. Measure its geometry and describe pedestrian or vehicle traffic, water contact and cleaning conditions. Check the selected product’s compatibility, primer requirements, backing arrangement and application instructions. For existing joints, identify old sealants and contamination before planning replacement. Details that connect to a waterproofing or flooring system should be coordinated with that system, including transitions, terminations and any required protection during curing.
